Pedestrian crossing at Rainbow Bridge
The classic. Walk from the Canadian side near the Skylon Tower onto the bridge. CAD 1 toll at the booth (cash or contactless). Walk across in 8 to 12 minutes, enjoying the view of both falls and the gorge below. US Customs office on the US side, expect 5 to 30 minutes wait depending on the time. Show your passport, answer the standard questions, you are in the US.
Driving across at Rainbow Bridge
Lanes get long fast in summer. Avoid 11 AM to 3 PM. Cars queue can reach 60 minutes. Use the express lane if you have NEXUS or commercial tags. CAD 5 toll per car. US Customs questions are the same: where do you live, what is the purpose of your visit, how long will you be in the US, do you have anything to declare.
Required documents
- Valid passport for both Canadian and US citizens
- NEXUS card as alternative for pre approved travelers
- Enhanced driver licence from select Canadian provinces or US states (limited list)
- For minors, passport plus a notarized travel consent letter if travelling with one parent only
- Visa or ESTA for non US/Canadian citizens (most travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries can use ESTA, USD 21)
Coming back to Canada
Same documents, same questions. Canadian Customs typically asks where do you live, how long were you in the US, and whether you bought anything. The personal exemption for less than 24 hours absence is CAD 0. For 24 to 48 hours it is CAD 200. Above 48 hours it is CAD 800. Most day trippers stay under 24 hours and bring nothing back.
Best time to cross
- Best, 7 to 10 AM going south (CA to US), 6 to 8 PM going north
- Worst, 11 AM to 3 PM in either direction during summer weekends
- Avoid Saturday afternoon entirely, queues can hit 90 minutes
Take a tour and skip the planning

Check availability →Common mistakes

- Bringing fresh fruit, vegetables or meat, US CBP will confiscate
- Driving across without checking traffic, the wait can blow your day
